Students at New Central have just completed the Blue Stem Reading Program for 2025. Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, books on the Blue Stem list may include both timeless classics and current titles. These books may also have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists. Encouraging students to read challenging books, NC offers multiple levels of success and rewards. 40+ students decided to pick up a few Blue Stem books and accept the challenge. Students who read 15 or more of the 20 books participated in the Blue Stem Challenge which is a format similiar to Scholastic Bowl. Those students were Derringer Hilst, Emma Strauman, Brooke McCausland, Kenley Okeson, Bexley Bell, Hailey Thomas, Lincoln Bals, Oliver Davis, and Brooklyn Troxell. Lincolns, Oliver, and Brooklyn read all 20 books! The results of the Blue Stem Challenge were: 4th place Kenley Okeson, 3rd place Brooklyn Troxell, 2nd place Derringer Hilst, and 1st place Emma Strauman. Great job to everyone who participated!

Havana Junior High School has been working hard the past couple of weeks making the perfect brackets for this year's March Mammal Madness competition! Students have been researching their combatants, thinking about animal traits, and home habitat advantage when selecting the most favorable combatants to win the tournament. In the next couple of weeks, middle schoolers will be either watching their carefully made bracket crumble from unexpected upsets, or shine because of their thorough research! *Pictured: Ms. Sennett's 7th and 8th grade Science classes in front of the combatant wall.

Third and fourth grade students voted for their favorite Bluestem book today. Marshmallow and Jordan was the overall winner. We will find out the state wide results later in March. Election judges were the New Central students who read all twenty Bluestem books. Brooklyn, Lincoln, and Oliver covered all aspects of the election process right down to counting every last vote.
