Yesterday the 4th grade students went to Springfield to view a production of "Number the Stars" by Louis Lowery. We also had the privilege of taking a small tour of the campus at the University of Illinois Springfield! The students really enjoyed learning about all the things they could do if they choose to attend! What a learning experience for them!

First graders at New Central celebrated Leap Day by doing leap frog math. They used plastic frogs to practice measuring, graphing and adding.
This week, the 3rd and 4th grade students got their chance to go to the Spark Smithsonian exhibit here in town! The kiddos really enjoyed their time there! If you get the chance to go, we highly suggest it!
First grade enjoyed celebrating the 101st day of school today! We spent the day creating, building, rolling, and exercising our way to 101.
First graders, who are studying astronomy, used oreos to make models of the phases of the moon. They had to use teamwork, perseverance and patience.
The first grade classes walked to the post office to mail letters to Santa today. They ran into Mr. Grinch along the way. After mailing letters, the students sang Christmas carols at several downtown businesses. Thank you to everyone who helped make it a special day for our students.
Mrs. Deters' first graders became detectives this afternoon using our 5 senses to identify 4 mystery foods!

I am happy to share that Havana Schools will be moving to the Community Eligibility Program for next school year. The National School Food Service reimbursement program traditionally required families to verify income to determine if meals were free, reduced or paid. The Community Eligibility Program bases reimbursement on the demographics of the entire community and eliminates the individual family eligibility. This change will make 1 reimbursable breakfast and 1 reimbursable lunch at no cost to all students for the coming year regardless of family income. Money will only need to be deposited to purchase extra food items that exceed the standard breakfast or lunch offering going forward. This change will not affect any prior account balances from prior years and only apply to meals going forward. We are excited about this change and the benefit it will be to all families.

Lincoln Bals had a busy day at work as Principal of New Central. Lincoln purchased the Principal for a Day certificate at the Duck Pride store. Students earn Duck Bills to use at the store for following schoolwide expectations. Awesome job, Lincoln!
