To All In-Person Learners
The first day of school is this Monday, August 24th. All students should check their schedules in Alma because they could have changed recently. All students will enter only through the two west entrances. Mr. Wherley and I will be checking temperatures before students enter the building. The doors will open at 7:40 a.m. As soon as a student enters the building they must go directly to their 1st hour class that is on their schedule, unless a student is eating breakfast. I will then present to the students over the intercom our procedures for this year. Afterwards, students may see Mr. Wherley to have the schedule fixed only if they are missing a class. Day One changes will be dedicated to students without a full schedule. We will announce when other students can change their classes. The last day to change schedules will be Friday, August 28th. After the first day, parents will need to certify that their own students meet the criteria to come to school by going over the “Covid Screening Questions” with their students. If the student is ok they are to wear their bracelet that they will get the first day. If they answer yes to any one of the four questions, then they must stay home and we ask that you call the office for further instructions. The screening questions will be given to your student on the first day and they will be posted on the high school website.
Thank You,
Mr. McKinney

Remote Learners
1. Your online education provider will be Educere. Classes will have a virtual instructor where you watch videos and have school work to complete. There will be an instructor from 7:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. you can ask any questions you have.
2. This will be a semester commitment. You will need to put 6.5 hours a day into your on-line education just like you have to when you are at school. There will be real grades no matter what given by this company. We will not give out incompletes unless it follows our handbook guidance. If courses are not finished the student will receive a failing grade for the course.
3. We will pass out computers to Remote Learners Thursday from 1:00 – 3:00 in the library. A – K from 1:00 – 2:00 and L-Z from 2:00 – 3:00. Remote learners will enter through the office door. All will be masked and screened before they enter.

5. Educere online learning begins on Monday August 24th.

If I test positive or am ill with symptoms, when can I return to school or work? This flow charts was created after consulting with the Mason Co. Health Department.

For those that did not register online, High school registration is Thursday August 06th (tomorrow) from 9:00 – 1:00 AND 2:00 – 5:30
To limit contact - For each student: Only one parent will be allowed in the building and their student can accompany them if and only if they need a schedule change.
We will be asking for every parent to make sure their contact information is correct. We need a current phone number, address and email. We encourage everyone to establish a parent Alma account (Our Student Management System). We can help you with that if you do not have one. We also encourage you to download the Alma Now application and the Havana Ducks application for your phones.
High school information goes out through the high school sites: Our webpage, Facebook page, Twitter page. We also will send out phone messages. Make sure you check the high school accounts for high school information to include our calendar.
Before coming to registration we ask all planning to enter the building go to the high school website and scroll to the bottom of the page and go through the Covid Self checker and make sure that you or your student do not have any of the signs of Covid 19. I will ask you to give me a thumbs up if you and your student do not have Covid signs before allowing you to enter the building.
Everyone will enter through the gym doors on the West side of high school building. Anyone entering must have a mask on and it must be worn over the mouth and nose at all times. We ask that all maintain 6 feet apart.
Filling out Forms, checking demographics and dropping off other paperwork will be done in the hallway. Paying fees and changing schedules will be done in the office.
All will exit out the west side doors by the office and we ask that you then go to your cars and exit the school property.
We will have signs to direct you.
We are going to do everything we can to keep this virus out of our schools and have our students at school continuing their essential education.
We will distribute masks, bracelets and computers to students the first day of school.
In advance thank you for your patience and cooperation.
God Bless,
Mr. McKinney

At the high school: I have not been able to find a Spanish Instructor. It looks like we will have Spanish classes online this year. Students will sit in the Spanish classroom the same hour they are assigned their Spanish class and they will work with an online instructor during that time. There will be a remote instructor with homework and quizzes and tests submitted online and feedback will be provided from remote instructor. This will be a little more rigorous than former students are used to. Students will need a headset with a microphone. If you would like to change classes contact Mr. Wherley by registration. Keep in mind some colleges do not require Spanish and that competitive colleges require 2 years of Spanish and some colleges that are elite require 3 or 4 years. It all depends on what you plan to do.
Example: Harvard requires 4 years of Spanish, Stanford requires 3 years of Spanish, University of Illinois, Illinois State requires 2 years of Spanish, Western IL University does not require any high school Spanish.
I will continue to look for an instructor and hopefully by next year we can find a Spanish instructor.
Take Care,
Mr. McKinney

High School Remote Learners (Only): If this is for health concerns I understand. This is an individual decision. Any student that chooses to do Remote Learning will be making a commitment for the entire first semester. Remote Learning students will be taking their classes through a virtual education site. We will give them url to go to in order to login. Remote Learners will be provided a user name and a password. These courses are offered online virtually. There will be a virtual instructor and grading. All course work will be completed online. Students who complete courses will receive a grade from the online course and all students who receive a 60% D- and above will receive a Passing grade. All course will count as pass or fail for report cards, graduation and the student’s transcript. They will not be receiving letter grades. Our teachers having nothing to do with these courses and will not be available for help. All students will coordinate with the online provider with any technical issues or help with educational issues that they may have. We will get computers out to the Remote Learners right before school starts. We will have an announcement out later. Anyone that would like to change their status from Remote Learning to In Person Learning will need to call the high school office prior to Monday, August 10th, or email dmckinney@havana126.net or awherley@havana126.net
Thanks,
Mr. McKinney

On-line Registration issues:
1. The first thing you have to do is log on to Alma. Here is the high schools Alma homepage if you forgot https://hhs.getalma.com/home
2. Then in a new tab go to the link below for directions. Click on the appropriate link in the directions. For most parents this will be the link for a parent that has an Alma account. https://5il.co/hmdm
***I believe many of you were not logging into your Alma account first. If you follow the directions from the link this should fix your issues with registration.

This is Mr. McKinney
If you have not set up an account with our student management system, Alma, please do so. If you have provided the school with your email then you will receive an email inviting you to set an account up tonight at 5:00 (Monday, July 27). If you do not see the email, please check your Spam folder. If you already have an account, then ignore the Alma invite email. If a parent/guardian has forgotten their Alma password, then send an email request the Mr. Wherley or myself and we will reset your password.
If you could online register your student for school this would help us tremendously. You will need an account with Alma first. If you have an account follow the instructions on the high school website under the Live Feed section for registration. If you are a returning student to Havana School District then fill out the form for returning student. If you have moved and are new to Havana School system, then fill out the New Student form.
In regards to in-person Registration for the high school, I am moving the registration day to Thursday, August 06 from 9:00 – 1:00, 2:30 – 5:00. Only one parent will be allowed to accompany the student. We will only allow 45 people in the building at a time. We ask you to park in the West parking lot. I will be at the west doors controlling the number of people in the hallway. The hallways will have tape on the floor to mark social distancing. All will be required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth in order to enter. Registration forms will be filled out in the office.
Freshman Orientation – Will be on Tuesday, August 11th. In order to keeping numbers below 50 in the high school gym, only one parent/guardian can accompany their student. All must wear masks upon entering the west side doors. There are 3 time slots.
Last name A-F will be from 5:30 – 6:30, G-M will be from 6:45-7:45, N-Z will be from 8:00-9:00.
I have sent out an email to all on how to powerwash your chromebooks. Your chromebooks will be taken off our network sometime Tuesday and afterwards you should be able to powerwash your machines and set them up as your own.
Mr. Plater has our district wide policies written for having school this year. I have the specific procedures written for the high school and I am waiting on the last minute changes we are expecting from our state leadership before I send it to everyone. I want you to know I will do everything I can to make this a safe school and that I will try to provide as many experiences for our students’ this year as I am allowed to provide.
There will be two educational options given in person instruction or remote learning. With in-person instructions students will have school on the early dismissal schedule every day. With remote learning, students will need to log into their teacher’s video stream during their class period to view instruction. They will be able to email questions they have. The same classroom work with the same due dates will be required. Everyone will receive typical grading for their classes this year.
More Guidance Coming Soon,
Mr. McKinney

Registration: We are encouraging all who can to register their student and pay their fees online. The link at the bottom provides directions for online registration and fee paying. If you are not able to do so, then we will have high school student registration on Wednesday, August 05th at the high school gym from 9:00 - 1:00, 2:30 - 5:00. We ask that you park in the west parking lot. Only one parent/guardian will be allowed in to register their student. The student may accompany the parent if they need a schedule changed. Masks will be required upon entry. We will only allow 50 people total into the gym. Again, I think it would best serve everyone if they registered and paid fees online. Here is the link to the directions. https://5il.co/hmdm

Some of you are going to want the video(s) as a keepsake and if you do a little research in Google you can find out how to download a Youtube video. This is the only way we could do it because of the size of the file.
Take Care,
Mr. McKinney

There will be a regularly scheduled School Board Meeting tomorrow. We look forward to seeing you there!
