At New Central, it is our goal to support the whole student by focusing not just on their academic growth, but also their emotional well-being. One way we support this is through Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Each class participates in an explicit SEL lesson, led by our social worker, every other week. Additionally, these skills are naturally woven throughout the school day as staff are always on the lookout for on "teachable moments."
What Is Social Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional Learning helps children understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenges in healthy ways. SEL helps students build the skills needed to:
Get along with others
Express their feelings appropriately
Solve problems peacefully
Build confidence and empathy
Learn more effectively in the classroom
These skills are just as important as reading, writing, and math—and they help children succeed both in school and in life.
Research and experience show that children who develop strong social and emotional skills:
Feel safer and more confident at school
Have fewer behavior problems
Build stronger friendships
Are better prepared to learn
Develop lifelong skills for work, family, and community life
These skills help children grow into respectful neighbors, good teammates, and caring community members
How Families Can Support SEL at Home
Parents and caregivers play an important role in SEL. You can help by:
Talking with your child about their feelings
Modeling calm problem-solving
Encouraging kindness and empathy
Praising effort, not just outcomes
Helping children name emotions and talk through challenges
When schools and families work together, children thrive. Your partnership is invaluable.
